Answer to February 2008 Newsletter Brain Teaser:

The original reason was so that people wouldn't shave off the edges. This dates from the days when coins were still made of precious metals like silver and gold. Governments have continued using the grooves because each coin has a distinctive pattern that helps visually impaired people tell coin denominations from each other.
